Charcoal drawing with layered shadows and form

Still Life of a Plate of Fruits

This charcoal composition captures the richness of form and shadow through layered techniques.

Process & Tools

  • Charcoal: The piece began with a light charcoal sketch to define the shapes. The hardest charcoal was applied to the background and deep shadows, while medium charcoal filled most of the objects.
  • Blending & Texture: Small blending stumps were used to create subtle depth and texture on the fruits, while a larger stump emphasized strong outlines. A sponge softened interior tones, and a triangle eraser introduced highlights for dimensional contrast.

Still Life of Blocks and Ribbons

This piece was created using colored pencils and the hatching technique to achieve depth and vibrant color blending. The palette includes yellow, blue, red violet, red, white, and black.

Process & Tools

  • Color Mixing: Green was achieved by layering yellow and hatching blue on top. Orange was created by using yellow as a base and adding red hatching. Purple came from a red violet base with blue hatched over it.
  • Shading: Black pencil was applied in hatched strokes to add dimension and shadow, enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the composition.

Still Life of Bottle and Fruits

This charcoal still life emphasizes contrast and texture to create a dramatic composition.

Process & Tools

  • Charcoal: The piece began with a light charcoal sketch to outline the shapes. Lighter charcoal tones were applied to the fruits with pale surfaces, while medium charcoal added depth to the bottle and darker fruits. The hardest charcoal was used for the background and shadows, creating a strong sense of contrast.
  • Blending: A sponge was used to blend and soften transitions, and an electric eraser added crisp highlights on the bottle and fruits, enhancing realism and dimensionality.

Still Life of Back Porch at Night

This charcoal artwork captures the quiet drama of a nighttime scene with strong contrasts.

Process & Tools

  • Tools: The composition was based on a view of my back porch at night. A 12-inch ruler and charcoal pencil were used to construct the porch structure.
  • Techniques: The background was completely darkened using the hardest charcoal for a deep, rich tone. A triangle eraser removed charcoal to reveal tree shapes and fence lines, while an electric eraser added fine details to the leaves. A sponge softened the charcoal on the porch, creating depth and a sense of atmospheric perspective.
